Economic Fairness – Disposable Income
Disposable Income
Disposable household income after basic housing costs – rent, mortgage interest payments, council tax etc, but not fuel or food – is around £623 per week for a household formed of a couple with no children at the middle of the income distribution and in London, now above the national amount, with the difference having grown in recent years
To compare over time, the figure is adjusted for earlier years using an overall national inflation measure. The median income fell through the recession following the financial crisis but has recovered since. However, there are significant differences in income levels within London and nationally, further illustrated in the Income Inequality measure within the Equal Opportunities theme of Economic Fairness.
